    Malaysia Activities ~ Angling

Surrounded by a long coastline and filled with many lakes and river systems, Malaysia offers vast scope for angling opportunities. Although fishing can be conducted all year round, it should be avoided at certain times. For freshwater fishing, the best time is between March and October. Fishing at the South China Sea should be avoided from November to January.

  Angling, Fresh Water Fishing

The many natural lakes, man-made lakes and rivers in the country are home to over 300 species of freshwater fish. One famous destination is Tasik ( Lake) Kenyir in Terengganu. Covering an area of about 380 sq km, it is South-East Asia's largest man-made lake and the country's largest expanse of fresh water. The flooded forests in Kenyir, created by the waters of over 40 rivers, offer the best fishing destinations.

Other famous freshwater angling destinations include Tasik Temenggor and Tasik Chenderoh. Like Kenyir, Tasik Temenggor, covering an area of around 150 sq km, was also built to produce hydroelectric power. Anglers should also visit Tasik Chini and Tasik Bera ( Malaysia's largest natural body of freshwater), both located in Pahang. There are more than 95 species of fish here, but they are primarily Toman hunting grounds. Upper Endau River in the Endau-Rompin National Park, Kuala Koh and Kuala Tahan, both in Taman Negara (National Park), make up the rest of the list of best freshwater fishing destinations in the country. Accommodations are available in most of these fishing destinations.

 Angling, Sea Fishing

South China Sea and the Sulawesi Sea are popular spots for game fishing. Among the prime destinations for game fishing are the Aur, Pemanggil and Tioman Islands. These islands are the main game fishing centres of the southern region and the prime Black Marlin regions in Peninsular Malaysia. Pulau Perak, about 60 nautical miles southwest of Langkawi and Tukun Perak, an atoll about 10 nautical miles south of Pulau Perak, are most famous for their Giant Trevally, where specimens of over 40kg have been recorded.

Labuan and its surrounding islands are the places for game fishing. However, the best fishing spots are the Lucornia Shoals, situated at about 164 nautical miles west of Labuan. It is an excellent spot for game fishing and deep-water bottom fishing. The waters around Sulawesi Sea near Pulau Mabul are the place to get big Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin and Sailfish.

 Angling, Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing, also known as bottom fishing, can be done almost anywhere along the coast. Among the prime destinations are Tanjung Karang, Sungai Besar and Bagan Datoh. The main target species for deep-sea fishing are Grouper, Snappers, Jacks and Stingrays.
