  Penang National Park, Penang

In the northwest corner of Penang Island lies Taman Negara Pulau Pinang. This discreet nature reserve straddles 1,266 hectares of coastal hill dipterocarps, mangroves, beaches, and rocky shores. In Peninsular Malaysia, it ranks second in size to Taman Negara. Although some parts were logged until the early 1970's, the forest remains largely intact.

As a metropolitan national park, it has potential for world heritage listing. Many species of flora and fauna - including rare and endangered ones - thrive here, barely 45 minutes from the city centre.

Well-planned access and infrastructure will strengthen the park's potential for eco-tourism. There are no roads - only trails, boardwalks, and walkways.

Taman Negara Pulau Pinang sends out a strong message about sustainable development. Just as Muka Head's antique lighthouse still guides ships safely to port, Taman Negara Pulau Pinang shines like a beacon of hope for preserving our natural heritage.

Penang SNational Park, Attraction and Activities

Taman Negara Pulau Pinang hosts several habitat types not found in a single location in other major nature reserves in Malaysia. These include tropical rain forest, wetlands, mangroves, mudflats, and the coast. It also boasts a rare meromictic lake, one square kilometre in size.
The park has some 150 bird species, including raptors like the white-bellied sea eagle and the Brahminy kite. One can also find crab eating macaques, green turtles, flying lemurs, and flying squirrels. Orchids, ferns, and palms count among the numerous plant species.

This hilly and forested reserve is an important catchment area, providing the island with fresh water. An established centre for marine and coastal studies at Muka Head complements research facilities.

There are ample avenues to observe and photograph birds, turtles and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The park is ideal for jungle trekking, made all the more interesting by uneven terrain, challenging slopes, and rocky outcrops.

The visitor will have a chance to experience different habitats ranging from sandy and rocky beaches to mudflats, mangroves, a meromictic lake, and tropical rainforest.

The reserve's matrix of habitats will interest both researcher and casual visitor. Easy access offers those seeking an alternative lifestyle, a convenient gateway to nature. One could hike along several trails leading to the park's major highlights.

 Penang National Park, Getting There

Getting There

Taman Negara Pulau Pinang is less than half an hour by road from the state capital, Georgetown. The short journey passes urban and rural settings. Located at the end of Batu Feringghi Road is the fishing village of Telok Bahang and the entrance to the park.

Accommodation

There are no facilities for accommodation in the park. Only participants of organised and structured programmes on nature study and conservation education are allowed to camp. But as the park is so near to the city, visitors have a choice of comfortable accommodation in Georgetown, Batu Feringghi, and Teluk Bahang. These range from five-star beach resorts to budget hotels and hostels.
